As you’ll note in the content of In His Own Words gallery, there is plenty of documentation regarding David’s not liking — nor endorsing — the use of his image over the years for items distributed in connection with his music and the roles he has portrayed. For example, these comments by David are in the DSF IHOW collection of quotes:
I don’t like the idea of being in the position of watching my likeness or my name or the images of me being sold piecemeal when I don’t want to have anything to do with them . . . . I don’t hold much truck with people who go out and make small fortunes based on other people’s talents. In my case, I’m more interested in doing my work well than having my face printed on a T-shirt … It’s ridiculous. I want it known that I don’t condone it and I don’t like it.
To honor David’s wishes, DSF has removed a related section of the DSF Forum that had invited fans to interact with each other regarding Memorabilia & Other Trophies, Where to Buy Photos, CDs, Posters, Etc., DVDs and Other Video, and eBay Sightings.
We were once guilty of purchasing David Soul memorabilia without any regard to how it affected David Soul, but by purchasing such personal and unauthentic — and many times illegal — items and memorabilia on eBay or any similar site only makes money for the sellers (sometimes thousands of dollars, in fact); most of these sellers get their hands on original memorabilia and then duplicate, reprint, and repackage it for sale. Their profits don’t benefit David personally, nor help the causes he supports, nor celebrate the joy he’s brought to so many throughout his career.
When fans purchase reprints from eBay, for example, they support the exploitation of David Soul by others; they help THEM make money off HIM and rob him of the right to his own image. The decision is yours, of course, but DSF strives to put it in perspective for you — so that you’ll join the boycott of these kinds of sellers and do so on behalf of David Soul.
Please see David’s interview with DSF from August 2011 in which he comments on this matter. Thank you so much for your support, but most of all thank you for honoring David Soul.
